PROTECT YOUR CAR FROM BEING HACKED

Hackers are a very real and scary part of our reality. People are aware of the problems hackers can cause when it comes to the safety of our computers, phones and bank accounts. What people don’t realize is, hackers often have the knowledge of hacking our vehicles. You could be driving to work one day, only to experience complete engine failure.

Your first reaction is to think something has physically gone wrong with the combustion of your engine. Our service center later confirms that nothing is physically wrong with your vehicle. People have experienced their radios changing its settings without being touched. The heat can shut itself off. Heated seats turn on all by themselves. The problem doesn’t exist within your vehicle’s makeup. The problem could be that your vehicle has been hacked. If you are concerned with the potential of your vehicle being hacked, let’s take a look at some simple ways that you can protect your vehicle.

Should I Invest in a Wheel Lock?

While it might seem too simple to be true, a steering wheel lock can make a big difference in the overall security of your vehicle. While it might not completely keep hackers from gaining access to the internal technology of your vehicle, it can make your vehicle look like it is safer than the vehicle next to it. Your hope is that the hackers move on to the next option.

Stay Away from USB Devices

Many of the newer makes and models of vehicles on our lot come with one or two USB ports. While this can be a really great feature, it can be dangerous to just use any device inside the ports. Something you plug in could be equipped with a dangerous virus. You may have requested a USB device from the manufacturer of your vehicle. Many people do this when a software update is needed. While you can trust the manufacturer, you can’t trust that someone didn’t get their hands on the USB device before you did.

Keyless Entry Security is Important

Keyless entry has been included in many vehicle models for a number of years now. While this feature lets you unlock and lock your vehicle with ease, it can assist hackers with gaining access to your vehicle. A hacker doesn’t need to have a physical key to get control of your vehicle. They simply need to know how to scan the locking system. Your key fob should always be with you. Don’t leave it with your vehicle. Some professionals even recommend keeping your fob wrapped in foil when you are home. This will block hackers from gaining access to your vehicle without you even knowing.
