Why Is My Car Not Accelerating?

There are many possible causes of reduced performance in your INFINITI. Sometimes, it can be challenging to determine the exact cause of your car's problem without an expert mechanic's assistance. If you start to notice that your car accelerates more slowly than normal or exhibits other signs of mechanical problems, it might be time for a trip to the service department to get an accurate diagnosis and make repairs. Prior to visiting the shop, however, you may be able to figure out what's wrong with the car based on its symptoms.

Foot On Accelerator

Dirty Oxygen Sensor or Mass Air Flow Sensor

The engine relies on a variety of components to work properly and ensure the car performs at its full capacity. If parts on the engine fall to pieces or become too dirty, the car won't function as well. One problem that you might be experiencing if the vehicle is slow to accelerate is a problem with one of the sensors in the engine. The engine contains two sensors that help with performance, which are the mass airflow (MAF) and the oxygen sensor. Either sensor may get coated with environmental debris such as leaves, dirt, dust, pollen, and other contaminants. The sensors can also wear out and break with age. When they stop functioning correctly, they keep air from reaching the engine, affecting its performance capabilities.

Malfunctioning Throttle Position Sensor

Another part that may become problematic is the throttle position sensor or the TPS. This sensor is a small but critical component for the engine and the car's entire mechanical system. The sensor ultimately regulates how much fuel the car receives, which then affects its performance capabilities. When the sensor stops working as it should, you'll notice a decline in the engine's performance. The car may be slow to accelerate, and it may have other problems, including starting and rough idling.

Clogged Fuel Filter

The fuel filter usually is one of the first and best lines of defense that your car has in keeping debris out of the engine and the fuel system. If the fuel filter gets clogged or the surface is too dirty, the contaminants it should be trapping make their way into the engine. The engine won't run smoothly, which affects acceleration and the car's fuel economy.

Dirty Air Filter

The car's air filter is also designed to keep impurities out of the engine. The air filter ensures that clean air reaches the engine so that the car can perform at its best. A dirty air filter will need to be replaced.
